Decriminalisation of hard drugs halted due to coalition disagreement

Slovakia has postponed plans to change its drug policy which would have seen so-called hard drugs, such as marijuana, decriminalised in small quantities for personal use. Justice Minister Lucia Žitňanská (Most-Híd) withdrew plans to soften the law on drugs after a disagreement between governing coalition partners. The coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) objected to the new draft law, with caucus leader Tibor Bernaťák stating earlier this week that emphasis should be put on prevention rather than drug decriminalisation.
