Smer party offers presidential candidacy to Šefčovič

The chairman of the largest governing coalition party SMER-SD, Robert Fico, has offered Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič the possibility to run for president. He is to be the party's number one candidate, the daily Dennik N has reported. Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák, who until recently was considered a possible presidential candidate, said on Wednesday that Šefčovič would be an excellent candidate for President. MOST-Hid Chairman Béla Bugár, himself a candidate, said that the governing coalition did not talk about a joint presidential candidate because the strongest political party, SMER-SD, cannot afford not to have a candidate.
