Opposition party leader leaves EP election campaign

On Monday, Igor Matovič, leader of the opposition Ordinary People party announced that he was leaving the European Parliament election run, where he was in the first position on his party's list of candidates. At the same time, he also called on voters to choose Peter Pollák, number three on the party's list. Pollák is a former Government plenipotentiary for ethnic minorities. "I am worried that this time next week, the front pages will be full of news that in Slovakia, a fascist party has won. The second sentence, however, will be that Slovaks have elected a Roma to the EP," said Matovič. He thus pointed to Pollák's Roma ethnicity and to the fact, that according to surveys, the far-right Kotleba People's Party Our Slovakia has increased its popularity and was in second place in some polls. In Slovakia, the European Elections take place on Saturday May 25th.
