One of the topics discussed at the meeting between Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak (a Smer-SD nominee) and the US State of Secretary Mike Pompeo in Washington were Turkey's activities and the situation in Syria. "We have agreed that we mustn't let DAESH reactivate and we mustn't let terrorists infiltrate the European territory," said Lajcak for the public broadcaster RTVS. He later met with the former US special envoy to Ukraine, Kurt Volker, reviewing in particular the efforts by President Volodymyr Zelensky aimed at settling the conflict in eastern Ukraine. In relation to EU-accession talks for North Macedonia and Albania, Lajcak said that he was disappointed that some EU states could not be persuaded to launch the negotiations. The minister considers it important that the two countries should not become demotivated in their EU-integration progress.
