Falling birth rate causes Slovak population decrease

The Slovak population decreased again last year. The Statistics Office reported on Thursday that this has happened for the third year in a row. Last year's drop was caused by a significant fall in the birth rate. According to the data, the Slovak Republic had 5,424,687 inhabitants at the end of last year. Their number decreased by over 4,000 year-on-year (y-o-y), dropping for the third consecutive year, while previously it had been growing for 75 years. Since the establishment of the independent Slovak Republic in 1993, the population has increased by 88,200, said the office's spokesperson Jana Morhacova.
