Ukrainian youngsters in Slovakia

On the 24th of February 2022, Ukrainians woke up to war. According to Eurostat data, at the end of 2023 more than four million non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine as a consequence of the Russian invasion in 2022, had temporary protection status in the European Union. Temporary protection is an EU emergency mechanism which is activated in exceptional circumstances of mass influx to provide collective protection to displaced persons and to reduce pressure on the national asylum systems of EU countries.

Many Ukrainians found their shelter in Slovakia. UNICEF´s data shows that about 12 thousand Ukrainian children are currently enrolled in the Slovak education system. Zuzana Vaňková, secondary school teacher and the Duke of Edinburgh´s Award consultant in Modra, western Slovakia, says that in general there are 3 groups of kids and teenagers from Ukraine in Slovakia. The first one definitely left Ukraine and doesn’t plan to go back. To the second group belong Ukrainians that believes the conflict is temporary and in a few months they will be back in their homeland. The last group consists of children who have not even enrolled in the Slovak education system, but continue with Ukrainian online education.
