Protection from terrorism top priority, says Prime Minister

Security is becoming the most important topic for both European and global politicians, stated Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at a press conference in Prague on Tuesday during the European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF). Fico was responding to the terrorist attack that took place in Manchester on Monday night (May 22). "Security and the protection of our people in Europe from terrorist attacks are becoming an absolute priority for European structures. It will certainly be openly discussed in this way at upcoming European Council sessions," said Fico.

The Slovak premier went on to say that leaders sometimes fail to formulate the priorities that they would like to present to the public. "Nowadays, there is no doubt that unemployment, social issues and climate matters can't be the number one issue any longer. The security of people living in the European area must be in first place," he added.

Fico also expressed solidarity with Britain. At the same time, he noted that Slovakia will provide assistance in the investigation into the terrorist attack if necessary. He pointed out that the intelligence services of the Visegrad Four (V4) countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) are able to provide valuable information in this regard, which has already been shown in the past.

At least 22 people, including children, were killed and some 60 injured in a suicide bombing that took place at a music concert of American singer Ariana Grande at the Manchester Arena on Monday night. According to the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, no Slovaks appear to be among the victims of the attack, for which Islamic State has claimed responsibility.

On Tuesday, Slovak President Andrej Kiska sent a telegram of condolence to British Queen Elizabeth II over the attack. Kiska stated that Slovakia stands with the UK and its allies in the fight against global terror and all forms of extremism. "Your Majesty, the tragic piece of news of the Manchester bombing, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives and many further injuries, has evoked deep outrage and sadness in me. The attack against young people and children is an immensely cowardly and shameful deed," wrote Kiska.
