The old, new far-right party

Members and sympathisers of the far-right Kotleba-People's Party Our Slovakia (ĽSNS) have registered a political party under the name 'People's Party Fortress Slovakia', which may become their refuge if the current one is banned for promoting extremist ideologies following a motion filled by Prosecutor-General Jaromír Čižnár, the Denník N daily reported on Monday. The newly registered party, which was originally called People's Party, was renamed in the official registry of political parties on June 8, with Our Slovakia MP Martin Beluský featuring as its statutory representative. If the current party is dissolved by court, his MPs most probably won't lose their seats in Parliament, but they'll definitely be stripped of state contributions and won't be able to run for their original party any more. Nonetheless, their leader Marian Kotleba has already indicated that he has a Plan B up his sleeve.

"An evaluation of a large amount of evidence has shown that political party Kotleba-People's Party Our Slovakia, an extremist political party with fascist tendencies, is violating the Slovak Constitution, laws and international treaties with its programme and activities. According to the opinion of the Prosecutor-General's Office, the aim of this political party is to eliminate the current democratic system in the Slovak Republic," stated Prosecutor-General's Office spokesperson Andrea Predajňová after Čižnár filed the motion in late May. The Prosecutor-General's Office concluded an investigation into over 170 registered motions with a request to file a proposal to the Supreme Court to dissolve the party concerned. It is still not known when the Court will decide on the motion.
