Slovak conceptual education in Hungary to instil Slovak identity

The conceptual learning program for Slovaks living in Hungary, implemented by the National Slovak Administration in Hungary (CSSM), is not only about gaining control of the Slovak language but also about building national pride in children. This was stated in Budapest on Tuesday (13-6) for TASR by CSSM Chairwoman, Alžbeta Hollerová Račková.

Having already operated for two years now, the learning program was approved by the General Assembly of the CSSM on May 30, while looking at short and medium term plans as well as the action plan for the next two to three years.

"We have been able to map out all the problems that exist in education - both fundamental and technical - in the course of two years, during which we have prepared the concept. We have defined what we expect from the Slovak national education system in Hungary," said Hollerová Račková.

"As a main goal, we set out that when children go through this school system, they should learn in the Slovak language, so that they'll know how to communicate in Slovak, in order to have language skills and to acquire an emotional relationship with Slovak nationality," stated the chairperson.

According to the CSSM chairperson, the project's designers agree that in order to be successful, it will need well-trained pedagogues with regular retraining of the teachers who are now in the system, as well as motivating young people to choose being a Slovak teacher as a profession.
