Russian fake news disturbed Slovak Foreign Ministry

The Foreign Ministry has summoned the chargé d'affaires of the Russian Federation in Slovakia. The main topic of the interview was a statement posted on Facebook by an Office of the Russian Federation military staff member, regarding the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Slovak Ministry considers these statements as contradicting the will to develop good relations between both countries.

The 'fake news' informs of the UN high commissioner's report on fighting in Donbas; allegedly condemning Ukrainian activities and casting a shadow on Slovak politicians. The Russian military staff member, based in Slovakia, shared the disinformation from the Russian website Politikus, quoted by the pro-Kremlin Slovak portal Hlavné správy.

The Russian Federation representative was warned that it is absolutely inadmissible that statements made by the Office of the Russian Federation military staff member and representatives of the Russian Federation interfere into the home affairs of the Slovak Republic.

The Foreign Ministry called upon the Embassy of the Russian Federation to base their statements on entirely true and exact information. The ministry was primarily disturbed by a biased assessment of the UN High Commissioner report, mainly in parts dealing with the activities of the Ukrainian military protecting Ukrainian territory. The Ministry pointed at the deliberate elimination of the participation of Russian citizens in the conflict in Ukraine. Moreover, it was indignant about blaming Slovak representatives for lying. The Slovak ministry also pointed out that Slovak foreign policy is predictable, transparent and based on the detailed analyses of facts. "The Slovak Republic has always supported the thorough investigation of crimes against humanity in all conflicts and will continue in this support," reads the Foreign Ministry statement.
