Let’s talk about political alliances

The outcome of the elections to the European Parliament in Slovakia has shown that people do not want quarrels, but cooperation between political parties, the leaders of the winning coalition Progresivne Slovensko-Spolu (Progressive Slovakia-Together) Michal Truban and Miroslav Beblavý agreed on Monday. Together they called on President Andrej Kiska to join and cooperate with them ahead of next year's parliamentary elections in Slovakia. On June 17, after his presidential mandate ends, Andrej Kiska plans to outline the contours of his own party. "We invite Andrej Kiska to join this cooperation. It would be very good for Slovakia. It would be wrong to gamble with the fate of Slovakia. The less clear the offer, the greater the risk that Slovakia will not move ahead even after the next parliamentary elections," said MP Beblavý.

We need to join forces, to co-operate and we need to put up a fight for every vote, the outgoing President Andrej Kiska stated in reaction to the call from Progresivne Slovensko and Spolu. However, he is also of the opinion that more than three parties should join forces as all those who are convinced about the need to replace the current Government need to do so. "Not only Progresivne Slovensko- Spolu and Kiska, we also need to join with OLaNO, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH). All these democratic parties need to come together, not just declaratively," stated Kiska, adding that the leaders of parties considering the creation of a governing coalition should not "fire small, poisonous arrows at one another" and must start to co-operate. What form this co-operation should take, is in his opinion a topic for another discussion.

Meanwhile in another political camp, Pál Csáky the ethnic-Hungarian SMK party's lead figure in the European Parliament election, said that, according to him, it would not be a good move for his party to start holding talks with Most-Hid. He noted that there was an option that the SMK could co-operate with the current opposition parties but that it was too soon to discuss this. The party missed a spot in the EP by only 396 votes in order to reach the 5-percent national threshold. Most-Hid did not make it either.
