On Thursday morning, the blockade of the extraordinary parliamentary session ended. The six opposition MPs around Miroslav Beblavý, leader of the Together party, who had been blocking the speaker's desk for two days, left their position after two new desks were added to the plenary room. However, the atmosphere at the opening of the extraordinary session remained heated and full of strong statements. Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini, who came to open the session, bequeathed the MPs that they were undermining parliamentary democracy; while the MPs responded they were just defending democracy and constitutionality.
"You may speak about decency and good manners, but you behave like boors. You are misusing the mandate given to you by people for an ugly political theatre," stated Peter Pellegrini in his opening address presented from a surrogate speaker's desk.
Miroslav Beblavý stated in response that he and his colleagues were defending constitutionality, the institution of parliament itself and democracy. He repeatedly pointed to the illegality of the extraordinary parliamentary session on the introduction of the thirteenth pension or the cancellation of highway vignettes. The general election will be held in less than ten days and there is no need for such a session. Beblavý will ask the Constitutional Court to consider the constitutionality of the session.
"All our pleas were ignored by the Speaker, all our pleas were ignored by the Prime Minister. They just use their puppet of a Prime Minister to show off their power in a shameful manner," stated Miroslav Beblavý.
Shameful was the word that also the prime minister used to describe the protest by the deputies. According to him, in recent days, the opposition has set up a tent camp in the Parliamentary Plenum and metaphorically hung their socks on the state emblem. Opposition MP Martin Poliačik, who showed off his colorful socks, responded to these words that the state emblem has been decorated by the tragic murder of the journalist and his fiancée. In conclusion, Andrej Danko, speaker of the parliament appreciated that the heated atmosphere had not aggravated to openly aggressive behavior.
