Czech government cancels high-level consultations with Slovakia

The Czech government has postponed intergovernmental consultations with the Slovak government, cancelling a joint government meeting that was scheduled for late April and early May. "It's impossible to hide the fact that there are significant differences of opinion on some key foreign policy issues," said Prime Minister Petr Fiala. Specifically, he called the meeting of Juraj Blanár with Russian Foreign Minister Sergej Lavrov ‘problematic.‘

Fiala stressed that normal cooperation continues, and only high level consultations are postponed.
Prime Minister Róbert Fico reacted by saying that Slovakia’s foreign policy won’t be influenced by the Czech decision.

"The Slovak government will never put Slovak-Czech relations in any danger. We've noted that the Czech government has decided to jeopardise them only because it's interested in supporting the war in Ukraine, while the Slovak government is openly talking about peace," Fico said.

President Zuzana Čaputová wrote on her Facebook page that she was sad to see this happen. And the leader of the largest opposition party Progressive Slovakia said this is probably the worst moment in the shared history of the two countries since the division of Czechoslovakia.
