“Ján Johanides is one of the most original writers of Slovak and Czechoslovak postwar literature,” reads the opening line of the first ever English translation of his book that was released at Charles University in Prague in June 2022. As part of the new series Modern Slovak Classics, But Crime Does Punish was translated by Julia and Peter Sherwood.
