International organ festival in Nitra

The International organ festival Ars Organi Nitra started on Sunday in this western Slovak town. The event will present 4 more concerts each Sunday through 28 May. Audiences will have the chance to hear organ players from Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Spain. The concerts are held in two venues, either in the Piarist church or in the Holy Spirit Lutheran church. The organists will present not only classic pieces for their instruments but also music by contemporary composers including Denis Bédard or Petr Eben.

Slovak National Library opens digital library to public

The Slovak National Library has open its portal DIKDA – the digital library to public. In co-operation with LITA, the association of authors, it gives the opportunity to read hitherto rarely available works of Slovak literature, journalism and other genres. The extended list of literary works also gives benefits to their authors as LITA will provide them with new bonuses. So far, the digital database was available only for visitors coming to study to Martin, central Slovakia, the seat of the Slovak National Library. The literary works are now available online for free to all readers from the territory of the European Economic Area.

Stano Filko’s Retrospective in Graz

In case you prefer reading real books, here comes a tip for the launch of a book suitable for English speakers. A Retrospective - the first retrospective monography of artist Stano Filko’s last year – will be launched on Thursday in Halle fur Kunst Steiermark in Graz, Austria. According to art historians, future-oriented Filko “synthetised pop-art, Fluxus and conceptual art into a universal vision”. He is considered one of the most significant representatives of the so-called neo-avant-gardes in Central Europe. Filko participated in the Documenta exhibition of contemporary art which lead to his emigration to New York under the 1960’s Communist government. After the fall of the regime, he returned to Bratislava. Three Slovak experts will participate at the discussion which is a part of the launch event.

UK music in Bratislava

While in Bratislava, western Slovakia, it’s possible to see a concert thrown by duo My Nu Leg and  Dread MC. The duo coming from Bristol, UK, will present their fussion of techno, bass music, drum and bass and UK garage on Friday.

2023 Concert for Jan and Martina

In Gregorovce, eastern Slovakia, you can pay tribute to murdered investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova. The Concert for Jan and Martina will feature London based Slovak singer Jana Kirschner and songwriter Arny Margret from Iceland. The event will also hold a discussion with mother of the murdered Martina Kusnirova and the family attorney. All of that on the day marking the 5th anniversary of the planned wedding of the couple who was murdered two months prior. Supported by the Keeping up freedom project and co-financed from the state budget, the concert and the discussion will be held this Saturday in the village where the murdered Martina Kusnirova was born.
