Slovak becomes best film director in Oslo

Slovak director Viera Čákanyová has been awarded the title of Best Director at the Norwegian MIRAGE festival for her film NOTES FROM EREMOCENE. The film, co-produced by public RTVS, was selected by the world-renowned Spanish director Albert Serra who was the sole juror in this case. The MIRAGE film festival in Oslo showcases the best of A category festivals. Recently, this film by a Slovak director was also screened in Luxembourg, Melbourne and also for the second time in Peru.

Slovak culture in Ottawa

The event entitled “The Slovak Cultural Autumn“ started in Ottawa, Canada, with a debate with Janet Livingstone, an American translator of Slovak literature. The literary event organised by the Slovak Embassy in Ottawa in co-operation with Ottawa Public Library and The Network of European Union National Institutes for Culture featured the English translation of the successful book “Boat Number 5“ by Monika Kompanikova. This series of cultural events also features authentic Slovak folk songs and dances performed by the Vranovčan ensemble on Friday, 20 October.

Bratislava Jazz Days

The longest running jazz festival in Slovakia, the Bratislava Jazz Days, starts on Friday with gigs by the London based band The Comet is coming, British pianist Reuben James and Hip-zz, a project by Slovak musician Ernest Vizváry. On Saturday, Lakecia Benjamin - an exceptional American saxophone player, who before her solo career played and recorded with artists such as Harry Belafonte, Anita Baker, Stevie Wonder, will perform in Slovakia for the first time. The festival will close on Sunday with trumpeter Theo Crocker and the band Kokoroko presenting their typical London sound.

And on 25 October, the Anasoft Litera awardees for the best Slovak fiction book of the year will be announced at a ceremony to be held in the main concert hall of the Slovak Radio in Bratislava. As part of the ceremony, it will be possible to see a live performance by musician, composer and singer Katarina Malikova who has been played on significant radio stations in Europe as well as in the US. Her concert will be one of the last opportunities to see her performing ahead of her long term stay at the Berklee College of Music in the USA.
