Culture News: Invitations to summer festivals

It is exactly midsummer night tonight and the season of summer holidays is starting in Slovakia. Today, we have several invitations starting with the KVANTUM festival in Topoľčany.

The KVANTUM festival starts this Saturday, 22 June. On 11 July, the largest multi-genre festival in Slovakia, POHODA, starts at Trencin airport. Inviting us is its founder and general director, Michal Kascak:

Hviezdoslavov Kubín turns 70

The 70th annual of the competition in reading poetry by heart known as Hviezdoslavov Kubin started on Tuesday, 18 July in Dolny Kubin. This is the city where poet Pavol Orszagh Hviezdoslav was born in the late 19th century. The key representative of the use of the newly established Slovak language has been internationally recognised for his antiwar poetry book entitled "Bloody sonnets". Every year, Slovak primary and secondary school students as well as adults and poetry theatre ensembles meet at the national final of the competition in a staged reading of both poetry and fiction. The presented texts might be by Slovak poets and writers as well as by foreigners in Slovak translation.

Crème de la crème of Slovak drama in Martin

Dotyky a spojenia, the showcase festival of Slovak drama, will open on Tuesday, 24 June, in Martin, northern Slovakia. Through Saturday, 29 June, visitors will have the opportunity to see the most inspiring theatre productions staged in the course of 12 months, from April 2023 until April 2024. The selection was prepared by a council of experts. This year, the program includes, among others, the play “Filip” about a Slovak musician, staged in Trnava, the experimental play „Telegram“ presenting the story of 1920s Slovak playwright Jozef Gregor Tajovsky and his wife Hana in a contemporary context produced in Zvolen, and also authentic stories acted by homeless people under the title „Antigona (according to Sophocles and others)“.

30th ArtFilm with Cristi Puiu

On Friday, 21 June, the 30th ArtFilm Festival opens in Kosice, eastern Slovakia. The 7 day rally of films, discussions, concerts and award giving ceremonies will screen 5 films highly appreciated at the Cannes Festival. Among the stars attending the event will be the Romanian director Cristi Puiu who will hold a masterclass.
