Writer Ivana Gibová was awarded the 19th Anasoft Litera Prize for Original Prose on Thursday evening in Bratislava for her work Babička, published by Vlna. The jury praised her novel for its unvarnished reflection of contemporary Slovakia and for depicting the coming-of-age of the protagonist, Magda, in a traditional yet troubled Slovak family. The jury, consisting of Marek Debnár, Mária Klapáková, Radoslav Passia, Karel Piorecký, and Júlia Sherwood, selected her from 144 original Slovak prose works. Gibová received a prize of €10,000 and a designed bookend. The Reader’s Prize was awarded to Miroslava Kuľková for her debut collection of short stories, Hotel Balkán, which explores human destinies in the former Yugoslavia. The Anasoft Litera Prize honors the best original Slovak prose work or translation published in the previous calendar year. Past recipients include authors such as Marek Vadas and Milan Zelinka.
