Slovak 2025 Oscar nominee screened in Budapest

The film "The Hungarian Dressmaker” is based on the novel by the late writer Peter Kristufek. Directed by Berlinale prize-winner Iveta Grofova, it tells the story of a Hungarian widow who returns to her home in a village near the Slovak-Hungarian border. The film is set in wartime Slovakia, which was allied with the Nazis, and critics say that the events portrayed in the film, which are presented in a highly artful manner, are important to share. As well as the languages, this feature-length film blends the perspectives of Slovaks, Hungarians, Germans, Czechs and Jews, creating a non-standard piece of the puzzling situation of the 1940s in this country. The events portrayed have not been included in history textbooks or local cinematography.

"Everything that happened on the territory of Slovakia is part of our identity and I don't understand why we should somehow choose it," director Iveta Grofova told the daily Dennik N. She added that the most important thing for her was to show how difficult it is to do the right thing in a difficult situation.

At the end of November 2024, the film "The Hungarian Dressmaker" was screened in the Cirko Gejzír cinema in the Hungarian capital Budapest. The film, which was primarily aimed at members of the Slovak ethnic group living in Hungary, was included in the 30th Slovak Film Seminar organised in cooperation with the Slovak Institute. In the lead role the audience see an actress born in Nitra, western Slovakia, Alexandra Borbely.
