Women in politics – the day after

Women make up a fifth of newly elected MPs following Saturday's general elections, less than in the outgoing parliament where they represented a quarter of all MPs. The OLaNO party, which won the general election on Saturday, should have the highest number of women MPs at 15 (our of 53 MPs) , while Za ludi (For the People) should have the highest proportion of women MPs in its party caucus - a third. The make-up of the party caucuses that will form the governing coalition could well change, however, as MPs who join the Government are obliged to give up their seats in favour of candidates further down the list.

The Smer party, who came in second in the elections, does not perform better in terms of the ratio of women to men. The party has three women and 35 men among its candidates who were elected as MPs, so women make up only 8 percent of the total, the lowest share amongst the future parliamentary parties. The far right L'SNS should have two women and 15 men in parliament, but this should exceed Smer-SD in terms of percentages, as women should equal almost 12 percent of the party caucus. Sme rodina (We Are Family) has five women and 12 men elected, while Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) should be represented by three women MPs and 10 men.
