Slovaks will have to dig deeper into their pockets this Easter, as prices of several types of food have risen, Slovenská sporiteľňa bank analyst Lenka Buchalaková has stated. A family of four will have to pay on average 13 percent more for their Easter purchases this year as compared to 2019. A shopping trolley containing 20 various basic items will cost an average of €46,81, according to the most recent data provided by the Statistics Office.
"While Slovak households will save some money when buying dairy products this year, they'll pay an extra 14.5 percent for apples as well as pork products, whose prices have seen the steepest increases. This is chiefly due to African swine fever, which has decimated farms all over the world and caused an increase in demand for pork in Europe," stated Buchalaková.
Among the other items with increased prices are, for example, eggs (up 5.6 percent), semi-coarse flour (up 6.5 percent), ham salami (up 15 percent) and crystal sugar (up 7 percent per kilo). Conversely, goods such as curd (down 18.7 percent), butter (down 8.5 percent) and potatoes (down 11 percent) have become significantly cheaper.
