Analysts: Coronavirus to continue to affect household consumption

Household consumption started to recover in June this year, but it still has not reached the levels before the novel coronavirus outbreak, as is also proven by the latest statistics on retail revenues. According to analysts, the coronavirus outbreak will still have an impact on household consumption in the near future, and a possible second wave of the contagion may trim traders' revenues. With the gradual relaxation of measures to prevent the spread of the disease, household tastes have also begun to recover. "The June statistics for retail and restaurants were more positive than in previous months, when most outlets or establishments were closed or operating in a limited mode. For some retail areas, June revenues were higher year-on-year," said Wood&Company analyst Eva Sadovská. Compared to May, there was a recovery in revenues in both the food and non-food segments in June this year.

"A significant increase in revenues was posted mainly by sellers of computer and household equipment. Both segments reported even higher revenues in a year-on-year comparison, by about one tenth. This could be related to changes in the normal regime of households that spend more time at home, leading to increased investments in household equipment," said UniCredit Bank Czech Republic and Slovakia analyst L'ubomir Koršňák. According to the analysts, the coronavirus outbreak will have an impact on household consumption in the near future. "A stable recovery of retail revenues to pre-March levels can't be expected by the end of this year, and we don't expect a return to pre-crisis levels until the end of next year, but more likely during 2022," added Koršňák.
