Former president Andrej Kiska wrote on a social network on Monday that he was informed while in office about secret meetings that businessman Norbert Bödör had had with senior police officers in the past. Bödör - who has been in custody since summer, charged with money laundering - was allegedly using his contacts within the police to influence the investigation of criminal activities. He allegedly did so via former national police chief Tibor Gašpar, who served in that position for six years under Prime Minister Robert Fico. "The person who told me this would perhaps be ready to reveal much more. It's clear that the National Anti-Crime Agency (NAKA) still hasn't reached the top of the pyramid. Smer-SD chief and then-Prime Minister Robert Fico knew exactly what actions the police were taking against his political opponents," said Kiska who was investigated by the police for alleged tax evasion during his presidential campaign and who was Fico's opponent.
Last week police arrested many of their former top commanders, including Tibor Gašpar, who served as the national police chief for six years under Prime Minister Robert Fico. Both eventually resigned in the months following the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak in 2018, which provoked mass protests throughout the country. Gašpar is now charged with the crime of setting up and supporting an organised criminal group, various corruption crimes, and the misuse of power. At the same time, former top leaders of various departments of the National Anti-Crime Agency (NAKA), including the former head of its anti-corruption unit Robert Krajmer, were arrested on various corruption charges. "The police are working on a political commission aimed at damaging the formerly governing Smer-SD party," said Smer chairman Robert Fico on Monday, stating that he's acquired "findings" indicating this. At the same time, he called on interim police chief Peter Kovarik to investigate the role of individual police officers allegedly involved in the political plan to damage Smer.
