Poll: Major governing party in decline

Poll: Major governing party in decline

Had a general election taken place in November, it would have been won by the new party led by former Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini Voice-SD on 19.1% of the votes, indicates a poll carried out by Focus agency. The major governing Ordinary People would earn 14%, representing a loss of 11 percentage points in 8 months from the General Election. Junior governing Freedom and Solidarity would be third on 12.1%.

The fourth place would have been claimed by the far-right People's Party Our Slovakia (LSNS) on 9.6%, followed by Smer-SD on 9.5%, We are family with 6.1% and Progressive Slovakia on 5.9%. The last party to make it into Parliament would have been the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) on 5.1% of the votes. Junior governing For the People party would be left out of the house with 4.1%.

Thus, the poll confirmed the growth of the new Voice SD party and the decline of former major Governing Smer-SD. Voice was founded by people who left Smer. Moreover, according to the poll, the junior governing Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) is benefiting from its conflict with the major governing Ordinary People over restrictions regarding the coronavirus. As part of it, PM Igor Matovič (Ordinary People) tasked Economy Minister Richard Sulík and Education Minister Branislav Groehling (both SaS), to come up with solutions for their fields. According to political scientist Jozef Lenč of the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, this step could be a political move - if the numbers do not fall, the PM could blame Freedom and Solidarity.

The poll was carried out between November 18 and 25 on a sample of 1,004 respondents.
