Labour Minister Milan Krajniak resigns

The Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Family Milan Krajniak (We Are Family) has decided to step down from his post in order to show that his party is willing to make sacrifices in order to put an end to the current governing coalition crisis. He announced this at a press briefing on Monday evening, adding that President Zuzana Čaputová has already been notified of his decision and was asked to release him from his post as soon as possible. He returns to Parliament as an MP.

Speaker of Parliament and We are Family party leader Boris Kollar pointed out that the "theatrics continue" and that it's impossible to govern the country in this way. He believes that nothing would change if Prime Minister Igor Matovič (OLaNO) or Economy Minister Richard Sulík (SaS) were to leave their posts, as the conflict would only shift to Parliament and the coalition council.

The government of Igor Matovič has been embroiled in a crisis over the circumstances surrounding the purchase of Russia's Sputnik V vaccine earlier in the month, although the tension within the coalition goes back much earlier. It has been fed by disputes between Prime Minister Igor Matovič (OLaNO) and Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party leader and Economy Minister Richard Sulík.
