On Sunday, Prime Minister Igor Matovič of Ordinary people party announced that he is willing to step down, however, he conditioned this step with the departure of several other government members. The list of names includes: Economy Minister Richard Sulík (Freedom and Solidarity), Justice Minister Mária Kolíková (For the People), Deputy Speaker of Parliament Juraj Šeliga (For the People) and Parliamentary Health Committee Chair Jana Bittó Cigániková. Matovič also added that ministerial posts in the Cabinet must be divided among the four coalition parties strictly according to the results of the last year's general election, meaning that Freedom and Solidarity will have to yield one ministry in favour of Ordinary people. PM also said that after the reconstruction of the government, he would remain a member of the government, meaning that he would become head of one of the ministries.
The Freedom and Solidarity party reacted that it does not agree with the conditions, that it wants to negotiate and that it will not agree with the conditions that bear the mark of personal revenge. According to the party's stance, requiring the departure of those people who allowed themselves to have a different opinion is confirmation that the PM cares about personal animosities and not the country. Moreover, according to Sulík who offered his resignation if Matovič would lead one of the ministries, his offer is pointless.
The PM offered his resignation on exactly the first anniversary of the start of his cabinet. It has been marked by the pandemic crisis and continuing conflicts especially between Matovič and Sulík, which also led to the current coalition crisis. As part of it, Health Minister Marek Krajčí and Labour Minister Milan Krajniak have resigned so far.
