The memorandum of the Hungarian community, which was presented this week by the non-parliamentary SMK party to the Prime Minister Igor Matovic (OLaNO) does not contribute to a good relationship between Slovakia and Hungary, Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok (a Freedom and Solidarity/SaS nominee) said, commenting on the memorandum, which he considers to be a rejection of the prime minister's forthcoming gesture.
Moreover, according to the Prime Minister Matovič, presenting the radical demands of the Hungarian community was like spitting on the hand offered to be shaken. Matovič pointed out that this matter took place on Tuesday (June 2) at an event called 'We didn't write the past, the future is in our hands'. The aim of the meeting, which took place on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Trianon, was to express respect for the largest national minority in Slovakia and an effort not to return to conflicts from the past, but, on the contrary, to develop current good and friendly relations between Slovakia and Hungary.
The memorandum aimed at, for example, the creation of a "Hungarian region" in Slovakia administered by Hungarians, the recognition of Hungarian as an official language in offices and courts, and the creation of a separate archdiocese for the Hungarian Catholic community.
