Statistics: February death rate 59% higher than in previous years

The overall death rate in Slovakia in February was 59 percent higher than in previous five years, the Statistics Office reported on Tuesday. In total, 7,555 people died in Slovakia in the second month of the year, with the number of deaths significantly affected by the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, with almost a third of them being caused by Covid-19 according to post-mortem examination. One in every five people who died in February was younger than 65. The highest increase - almost 90 percent as compared to previous years - was recorded in the Trnava region, with the lowest increase, 15 percent, occurring in the Zilina region.
