GLOBSEC: Pope against destruction of environment, Čaputová calls for respecting rules

Pope Francis on Tuesday addressed the GLOBSEC 2021 Bratislava Forum in a pre-recorded speech, criticising economic inequality and the destruction of the environment.

"I see a model of economic and social life marked by many forms of inequality and selfishness in which a tiny minority of the world's population possesses most of its wealth and doesn't hesitate to exploit people and resources," remarked the pope, stressing that the recovery model following the coronavirus pandemic must take into account "correcting things that didn't work before."

In her opening speech, Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová emphasized the importance of rules and their observance in resolving pandemics, and in connection with security threats. She also highlighted the theme of the GLOBSEC conference, which is to rebuild the world in order to make it better. "However, it's not enough to talk about renewal. We must also talk about deep structural changes," she said, adding that these will have a much bigger impact than the current health crisis.
