On Thursday morning,Former Slovak Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan passed away at the age of 82. In 1994 and 1998-2006 he was three times Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic. Kukan was elected as an MEP in 2009 and 2014. In 2004, he unsuccessfully ran for the office of President of the Slovak Republic.
In 1964, Kukan graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, where he also learned Swahili. He received his doctorate in law from the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague. In 1993 he was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws by the American Upsala College (State of New Jersey).
