Day of Slovaks living abroad marked on July 5

The Day of Slovaks Living Abroad was marked by a ceremony in Janko Kral Park in Bratislava on Tuesday, July 5.

Slovakia hasn't forgotten you, wrote President Zuzana Caputova to Slovaks living abroad on her Facebook account on Tuesday. President remarked that some lived abroad for generations, others fled from the former regime and lack of freedom, while some have found work or better study opportunities outside Slovakia. However, they are all united by their love for Slovakia, Caputova stated. As she noted, Slovaks living abroad often work in prestigious university or scientific institutions and managed to establish themselves in their professions.

The tradition of laying flowers at the foundation stone of a future memorial to Slovak emigrants in Janko Kral Park was followed by music performances and speeches delivered by Slovaks living in Croatia, Great Britain and Canada. The evening cultural programme featured Slovak folklorists from Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Austria, Great Britain and opera singer Katarina Kalmarova from Serbia. Slovak countrymen have been officially marking the Day of Slovaks Living Abroad on Saints Cyril and Methodius Day since 1993.
