Gas and heating bills to rise by 15% in 2023

Prices of gas and heating for households will increase by 15 percent next year, while charges for electricity will stay the same, Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OLaNO) reported at a press conference on Thursday. According to Heger, had the state not intervened and had households been obliged to pay electricity prices set by the the regulatory authority, they would have had to pay 380 percent more than in 2022, and 225 percent extra for gas. In total, households alone would have had to pay an additional €6 billion when compared to 2022. Finance Minister Igor Matovic (OLaNO) stressed that Slovakia is experiencing the biggest ever increase in energy prices on the markets. According to the minister, Slovakia will be unique in Europe in maintaining this year's electricity prices. Matovic defended the 15-percent increase in gas and heat prices by pointing to the need to reduce consumption.
