First MiG-29 fighters already in Ukraine

The first four MiG-29 fighter aircraft are already in Ukraine, Defence Ministry spokesperson Martina Kakascikova told TASR on Thursday. The rest of the planes will be handed over to Ukraine within the next few weeks. In his video speech to EU summit-goers on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Slovakia and Poland for the delivery.

EU member states with sufficient stockpiles of ammunition will deliver it to Ukraine and their warehouses will be restocked later via the joint European procurement system, in which Slovakia will participate, interim Prime Minister Eduard Heger declared during an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday. Heger called this an "ammunition rotation", designed to speed up deliveries of ammunition to Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated in the video call that his country needs more ammunition for its defence, as soon as possible.

"That's why it's necessary for the countries that own the necessary kind of ammunition to send it at the earliest convenience. A year from now might be too late. Ukraine faces the offensive now, so we need to act," said Heger. As he added, up to 60,000 Russian missiles fall on Ukraine daily and Ukraine can fight back only with a few thousands.

The European Peace Facility budgeting reached €7.97 billion and the EU leaders agreed to have it increased by an additional €3.5 billion, according to Heger. He pointed out that not even Hungary has raised any objections to this, despite its track record of often opposing European military aid for Ukraine.
