Prague to donate €170,000 to Slovak town of Banska Stiavnica

Members of the Prague City Council on Tuesday approved a donation to the Slovak town of Banska Stiavnica amounting to 4 million Czech crowns (over €170,000), Prague City Council spokesman Vit Hofman said on Tuesday.
The donation has been divided into two parts: 2 million crowns have been earmarked for the liquidation of the consequences of the fire, while another 2 million crowns will serve to save monuments that have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
"By this, we show not only solidarity with the town destroyed by the fire, but also our interest in the fate of the historical and cultural heritage of Banska Stiavnica, which, like Prague, has been included in the UNESCO list," stated Prague mayor Bohuslav Svoboda. According to him, Czechs shouldn't be indifferent to the events in the neighbouring countries. "We are also grateful for any help in case of similar disasters," he added.
The fire broke out in one of the historical buildings in Banska Stiavnica's old town centre on March 18. The fire gradually spread, damaging seven buildings. It was the most destructive fire in the town's modern history.
Czech Culture Minister Martin Baxa has already promised Slovakia to help with restoring the cultural heritage. (TASR)
