Celebrating Europe Day in Bratislava

Today is Europe Day, a reminder of the values, strength and benefits of a united Europe. It commemorates the signing of the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950. An ambitious plan to secure long-term peace in post-war Europe, it is seen as the beginning of the European Union. On Tuesday 9 May, visitors to Bratislava's Old Market Hall will celebrate the birth of the European Union with a programme of interactive activities, competitions, workshops and music. TASR was informed by Ingrid Ludvikova, spokesperson for the European Commission Representation in Slovakia.

"Every year on 9 May we celebrate the successes and unity of Europe when we commemorate the signing of the Schuman Declaration, which in 1950 laid the foundations for cooperation between European countries and today's European Union," said Vladimir Sucha, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia. Europe Day is a great opportunity to celebrate a common European identity in all Member States, he said. "The symbolism of this day reaffirms the unity of Europeans and at the same time expresses the beauty of the variety of different cultures, languages and traditions that benefit the whole European Union and all Europeans," he added. Cooperation between countries based on peace, freedom and mutual respect is not a given, said Robert Sermek, head of the European Parliament's office in Slovakia. "So let us appreciate that Slovakia can be part of an EU that protects these values.

With the European elections coming up next year, the celebration of Europe Day will also be an assessment of what European democracy has brought us in practice over the past four years," he said. At the EU Day celebrations in Bratislava, visitors will learn more about the Member States and the opportunities the European Union offers its citizens. "A new feature is the EdUtajner, a white and blue container with the symbols of the current European Year of Skills. Inside you can test your knowledge about the EU," says Ludvikova. Visitors can also test their digital and critical thinking skills at the event.
