Speaking at an informal meeting of NATO countries' foreign affairs ministers in Oslo on Thursday, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Wlachovsky said that there are no better security guarantees for Slovakia or Ukraine than NATO membership. At the same time, Wlachovsky pointed to the fact that Ukraine received the promise of NATO membership at the Bucharest NATO summit already in 2008. The preparation of NATO decisions for the July summit in Vilnius (Lithuania) and the development of political relations between NATO and Ukraine, with an emphasis on further help to this country, were high on the agenda of the two-day meeting in Oslo that ended on Thursday. The ministers also discussed the need to strengthen NATO's eastern flank, including Slovakia.
