On Saturday, Slovak actor, screenwriter, director, pedagogue, reciter Juraj Sarvaš died at the age of 91, his daughter Svetlana Sarvašová has confirmed for TASR. Sarvaš was closely connected with the beginning of broadcasting of the Banská Bystrica studio of the then Czechoslovak Radio in 1957. He was one of the last figures to experience the golden era of the Slovak theatre. He was engaged in the Slovak National Theatre (SND) for 35 years (until 1996).
In addition to theatre, he played in several movies and performed in many TV productions. He played the main character in Palo Bielik's legendary film from the period of the World War I, Forty-four (1957) and in the war drama from the Slovak National Uprising, Footprints in Sitno (1968).
Until 2022, he was also passing on his art to students at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica he helped to found in 1997. In 2009, then president Ivan Gašparovič awarded him the Pribina Cross, Second Class for his extraordinary merits in the cultural development of the Slovak Republic, especially in the area of the spoken word.
