Slovakia to introduce mandatory school attendance for refugee children

The Education Ministry plans to implement mandatory school attendance for children of foreigners living in Slovakia long-term, specifically children of Ukrainian refugees, starting from the 2024/25 school year, as announced by Education Minister Daniel Butora after a meeting with school officials in the Nitra region on Tuesday. Butora acknowledged that schools are not yet prepared to handle mandatory attendance but assured that they will be ready by next year, citing capacity and teacher readiness as key factors. This school year, approximately 10,500 foreign children have been registered in the Slovak education system, and the Minister estimates that an additional 5,000-8,000 refugee children are residing in Slovakia without attending any nursery, elementary, or secondary schools.
