Slovakia wants Sweden in NATO before summit

Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Wlachovsky stressed that Slovakia would like to see Sweden as a full NATO member at next week's NATO summit in Vilnius. Minister said this after a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto in Budapest.

However, the Hungarian Parliament will not approve the country's accession to NATO this summer. It has postponed the vote until the autumn. The head of Slovak diplomacy says the postponement was a mistake. He hopes the process will be approved as soon as possible. However, Slovakia is very interested in peaceful relations with Hungary, with a positive agenda focused on the future and not on the past.

According to him, the relations between Slovakia and Hungary cover many areas and are time-tested. The minister thanked Hungary for joining the other two Visegrad Four countries [the Czech Republic and Poland] in protecting Slovak airspace since 1 July.

The ministers also discussed topical issues of bilateral, regional and European cooperation, strengthening relations in the fields of trade, defence, construction, transport and energy.
