Sts Cyril and Methodius celebrated on Wednesday

Hundreds of believers gathered in Nitra on Wednesday for the national Cyril and Methodius pilgrimage. The solemn Holy Mass was celebrated by an American bishop of Slovak descent, Larry James Kulick, Bishop of the Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, USA. He highlighted the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who brought contributed significantly to the formation of the moral foundations of the Slovak nation.

“With their conviction about equality among people and nations, Sts. Cyril and Methodius were ahead of their era, and their legacy is still vitally relevant even today,” President Zuzana Caputova stated on Wednesday. The head of state pointed out that Sts. Cyril and Methodius brought Slovak ancestors faith, education and culture.

"Their mission had not only a spiritual but also a political dimension - they elevated the old Slavic language among liturgical languages and strengthened the position of Great Moravia," she added. On 5 July, Slovakia observed a state holiday to commemorate the arrival of St. Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia in 863.
