President Zuzana Caputova has temporarily suspended the head of the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS), Michal Alac. Alac was charged last week with forming, directing and supporting a criminal organisation and abusing his powers. The President's spokesman Strizinec noted that the law requires officials to be temporarily suspended if they are suspected of having committed a crime and their continued stay in office could endanger an important interest of the public service, and that the President had done the same in the past when Alac's predecessor, Vladimir Pcolinsky, was also charged. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ludovit Odor will submit a motion to dismiss Michal Alac at the next cabinet meeting on Wednesday (23 August). He has not yet named a successor. He admitted that the secret service could be run by a deputy until the elections. He does not plan to dismiss the Police President, Stefan Hamran.
