Iceland buys emission allowances from Slovakia

The Icelandic Ministry of the Environment has bought surplus allowances from Slovakia for almost EUR 2.4 million. A total of 3.4 million allowances will be sold. The proceeds will be used to improve the energy efficiency of public buildings. This was announced by Environment Minister Milan Chrenko during a working visit to Iceland. The Slovak delegation there discussed measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through the use of geothermal energy. Slovakia currently uses geothermal energy for heating in only a few places. Out of a sustainable capacity of around 3,200 megawatts, thermal output reached over 80 megawatts last year, according to the ministry. During the trip, the head of the environment ministry will hold talks with the director of the Icelandic environment agency and the director of the energy agency. The Slovak delegation will also be received by the President of Iceland, Gudni Thorlacius Jóhannesson.
