The sale of weapons and artillery by the weapons industry of Slovakia to Ukraine is independent of government policy. The new government of Prime Minister Robert Fico last week announced Slovakia would not give any more military aid. Yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar explained: "That's because there is nothing left to give and we need to care also for our own security.“
But deliveries by commercial defense contractors are a separate matter, he said.
Slovakia will continue giving humanitarian aid and help Ukraine in other ways, such as with mine removal. “Because that has roots in peacekeeping," Blanar said.
He also said the EU should try and start peace initiatives between Ukraine and Russia. Prolonging the military conflict won't lead to any results and it would be better to freeze it for a longer period rather than to continue the killing, in his words.
