Audit Office finds waste in Slovakia’s World Expo expenditure

The Supreme Audit Office has found waste and mismanagement by the Economy Ministry in its presence at the Dubai World Expo. At least 640,000 euro was spent inefficiently or was not accounted for. The EXPO 2020 Dubai world fair was held from October 2021 to March 2022. The total cost for presenting Slovakia in Dubai amounted to almost €11 million, of which about €8 million came from the Economy Ministry's budget. The exhibition was organised by a five-member ministry team and a contracted company. The latter was paid €2.2 million from the ministry's budget.

"The inspection showed that the Department of the Economy did not ensure a sufficiently functional system of administrative and financial management. The department's internal control was not effective, the decision-making of competent persons was non-transparent. This resulted in the wasteful use of funds from the state budget," said vice president Henrieta Crkoňová.
