EU Commission ‘worried’ by proposed changes in criminal prosecution

The European Commission won't hesitate to intervene against Slovakia if the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico breaks EU rules on the rule of law. European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said in a debate in the European Parliament on Wednesday that measures could include restricting EU money.

Reynders said that the planned scrapping of the Special Prosecutor's Office and certain amendments concerning the functioning of judicial bodies in Slovakia are "worrying." Reform of the criminal procedure code should include sufficient and adequate safeguards to ensure effective investigations into new and pending criminal cases.

The European Parliament is expected to adopt a resolution on recent developments in Slovakia in January.

Prime Minister Fico reacted by saying that Slovak opposition MEPs are trying to damage the Slovak Republic at all costs with lies.
