President Zuzana Caputova said she might leave the approval of a new head of the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS) to her successor. "I wouldn't be the first president to decide... to no longer exercise their power to appoint officials given the fact their term of office is coming to an end," she said on a Sunday TV talk show.
The cabinet last week proposed Pavel Gaspar to be head of the SIS. This appointment is controversial because he is the son of the former head of police, Tibor Gaspar, who was indicted for suspicion of corruption two years ago and is still awaiting trial.
Caputova said the President is expected to ensure the proper functioning of institutions defined by the Constitution, and SIS is not one of them.
