President pardons man serving 10-year sentence for possessing marijuana

President Zuzana Caputova has granted a pardon to a 31-year-old man convicted of possessing marijuana for personal consumption, the President's Spokesperson Martin Strizinec told TASR on Wednesday.

The spokesperson explained that the man has served more than five years and four months of his ten-year sentence. The president pardoned the remainder of his sentence on the condition that he doesn't commit an intentional crime for a period of four years and eight months from the date of the pardon.

According to Strizinec, the President fully agrees with the idea that drug crimes should be appropriately punished. "However, considering the convicted individual, the circumstances of the crime committed and the lower social danger of his actions, she considers the sentence he's served so far to be sufficient. The President also took into account an ongoing society-wide debate on the excessiveness of punishments imposed for possession of marijuana for personal consumption," he added.
