Erik Kaliňák (Smer-SD), a politician for SMER SD and adviser to the Prime Minister asked the Slovak Intelligence Service to check the personal bank accounts of all journalists in Slovakia. This was his reaction to questions about the discovery that he had given an interview to the allegedly pro-Kremlin portal Voice of Europe. The Intelligence Service denied his request. The organisers of the Slovak award for journalists condemned this step and stated that these kinds of threats are unacceptable. Kalinak later described his statement as ironic on social media. The Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok claims he has no competence to do so. According to him, Kalinak did not mean seriously what he said.
