Parliament approved an amendment on museums and galleries

Museum and Gallery Directors will no longer be elected for five years, and the obligation to select them in a public selection process ends. Professional organizations, the Council of Galleries of Slovakia and the Association of Museums in Slovakia criticized the proposal as a step backwards. In the past, according to museum workers, it became clear that the time-limited work of directors was problematic and did not contribute to the progress of institutions and their modernization. "A limited term of office is a common practice in museums in Europe," the union pointed out.

In the final version of the amendment, the coalition MPs backed down slightly. Originally, they proposed the possibility of dismissing directors without giving a reason and the complete abolition of the obligation to select new statutory officers through selection procedures. According to the approved amendment, counties, municipalities or the Ministry of Culture still have the obligation to hold tenders, but they no longer have to be public. According to MP Roman Michelko (SNS), who tried to enforce the change, public proceedings were "an unnecessary administrative burden".

The Ministry of Culture will issue standards for museums and galleries and publish them on its website. "The standards of museums and galleries are measurable, comparable or other evaluation indicators of the recommended spatial, financial and personnel provision of museums and galleries and the quality level of the performance of basic professional activities and other activities of museums and galleries," defines the amendment modified by the amendment.  The legislation should take effect on June 1.
