Simecka: War nothing but distant memory also due to NATO and EU memberships

The horrors of war are nothing but a distant memory for Slovakia also by virtue of the fact that Slovakia is firmly anchored in the EU and NATO, and part of the West today, opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) head Michal Simecka declared in his commemoration of the Victory Day on Wednesday.

Simecka underlined that peace should never be taken for granted.

"Today we pay our respects to the victims of the most terrible war and the 20th century's greatest tragedy as well as to the heroes who fought against fascism," said Simecka and pointed out that war used to be a commonplace reality of our ancestors for centuries.

According to Simecka, it's necessary to become vigilant when someone endangers peace in Europe. "Today, it's Vladimir Putin with his aggressive policies and war in Ukraine. It's this very commemoration of all those heroes who fought against fascism that demonstrates how important it is to help Ukraine. Ukraine is not only defending its own territory and the lives of its people, but also the united, free and peaceful Europe, where we belong," he added.
